LUBEREGG CASTLE
Luberegg Castle is one of the most romantic and extraordinary buildings in the region, located across from Melk.
Luberegg was constructed just prior to 1787 by Joseph von Fürnberg, a famous Danube admiral and timber dealer from the Waldviertel.
By 1795, Fürnberg was bankrupt. From this time on, Luberegg Castle belonged exclusively to the royal family, the head of which was Emperor Francis II.
In 1919, occupying French soldiers made themselves at home in Luberegg. Luberegg, along with other hereditary Habsburg possessions, was also expropriated in 1919, subsequently coming under the control of the Austrian Forestry Service.
After extensive rehabilitation work on the ransacked and heavily dilapidated property, a first-class
restaurant and a museum dedicated to Emperor Francis II
were constructed in the castle, thus once again opening the doors
of the castle to the public.
In the course of time, Emperor
Francis II proved not to be a big enough draw for
a privately run museum. After a few years, the museum was forced
to close.
Beacon Towers of Luberegg:
In Luberegg, in the old shore area,
stand two round-towers. In the old days, they served
as lighthouses and signal towers for passing ships and also shed light
down on the timber storage and loading area by the
docks (built in 1780).
Luberegg Castle has been owned by the Josef
Pichler Family since 2002.
In 2005, flood protection was added
to this unique castle with the aid of financial support provided by the federal
and state government, along with private funding, while the main castle is
currently undergoing renovations (under monumental
protection).
