WELCOME TO A PIECE OF WORLD CULTURAL HERITAGE
Enjoy the Wachau at its most beautiful, combining an array of cultural highlights, superb
cycling and memorable culinary experiences - however the mood
takes you.
The Wachau has now been added to the World Cultural Heritage List. UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee added this 36 kilometres-long Lower Austrian river valley, extending from Krems to Melk, to its World Heritage List as a “Cultural Landscape”.
"This short stretch of the Danube - 36 km of a total of 2,800 km – is unique", states the justification for its addition to the list. Through its diversely structured landscapes, its important cultural monuments and its ensembles of small communities, this segment of the Danube represents an historic cultural landscape of outstanding and universal value .
Due to the mild climate caused by the Danube itself, hillsides inclined optimally towards the sunlight and the special quality of the soil itself, the Wachau grows exceptional wines –wines that are prized by connoisseurs around the world.
Whether you are underway by
bicycle, car, or by the power of your own two feet, with its
numerous sights, the Wachau is a region that is definitely not
to be missed.
